Read Isaiah 17-20.

In Isaiah 17-20 we find prophecies regarding Damascus, Cush (Ethiopia), and Egypt.  Almost complete annihilation is forecasted for these nations that have turned their backs on God.  It is only when God's judgment is carried out that “In that day men will look to their Maker and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.” (Is. 17:7 NIV)  Commentators note that this passage points to a coming Messiah who will rule over all. I wonder why nations must face complete destruction or captivity before realizing the errors of their ways.  This seems to have been a pattern during these ancient times (700s B.C.).  Fast forward to 2012 and we find tumult in this very same region of the world.  I take comfort in Is. 19:20 “…When they cry out to the Lord because of their oppressors, he will send them a savior and defender, and he will rescue them.”  It is reassuring to know that God is in control, even in times when it sometimes seems hopeless.
