CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE
Call to Confession
The empty cross, the primary symbol of our faith, focuses our attention on the gift of salvation through Christ's suffering and death on the cross.  Jesus had to die on the cross because we cannot save ourselves.
God said, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
But that which was only dust has now received the breath of eternal life through Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
Prayer of Confession (from the Book of Common Prayer)
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives; our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people, our anger at our own frustrations, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves; our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, our dishonesty in daily life and work, our negligence in prayer and worship and our failure to commend the faith that is in us.  Amen
Hymn of Confession:  When I Survey the Wondrous Cross       PH 384:1-4
Assurance of Pardon:
As sin reigned in death, grace also now reigns through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.  He was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.  Thanks be to God!

WORSHIP TODAY
WELCOME TO CALVIN CHURCH!  As we gather for worship this day, we are grateful for the presence of members and guests.  If you are a visitor, we hope you feel warmly welcomed and very much a part of this worshiping community as together we lift up praises to our great God and King.  We invite everyone to come to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service.  Our pastors and elders are happy to greet you at the doors as you leave the sanctuary after our services today.  Prior to the service this morning you were greeted by Corrin and Lisa Meyer (atrium) and Ann Noteboom (east).  This evening John and June Primus (Fellowship Hall) welcome you back for our vesper service.
A FRIENDLY NOTE TO OUR GUESTS:  Our worship service proceeds unannounced.  The Sing! book is located underneath the pew.  The new Calvin Church DVD is available at the Information Desk for visitors who are interested in Calvin Church and would like to know more about the activities here.
CHANCEL BANNER DESCRIPTION:  Lenten.
The black dominating this banner symbolizes the death of our Lord.  The red expresses Christ’s suffering; the branch is a symbol of His crown of thorns.  These symbols are not meant to be concerned only with death and suffering; the thorny branch is white and flowering to indicate that from suffering triumph will come, and the red orb symbolizes Christ’s victory.  Just as the sun illumines, quickens and comforts, so Christ as the “Son of Righteousness” gives new life to His own.
CHILDREN WORSHIP:  Visitors’ children are warmly invited to participate in our TLC (The Little Children) and Worship Center programs.  Preschool children may go to their TLC room before the morning service (in the lower level).  Children (K – 4th grade) will depart the sanctuary steps following the Children’s Message to worship in a space designed especially for them.  The TLC and Worship Center rooms are in the lower level—just go downstairs and follow the arrows.  Children are picked up by their parents in these worship rooms after the service.  If you have any questions, please stop by the information desk or feel free to check out the classrooms before or after the service.  All of the youth programs are explained in the red folder on the table near the nurseries.

WORSHIP NEXT SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 28 Second Sunday in Lent
Next Sunday morning:  During the season of Lent our morning services progress through the themes of the confessional truths of Christ’s passion as summarized in the Apostles’ Creed (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 15 and 16).  Next Sunday morning Pastor MacLeod will be preaching on “He Was Crucified.”  Our offerings will be for Global Gifts.
Next Sunday evening our Junior Bells will contribute to our offering of music in worship and Pastor MacLeod will offer a meditation on “Unseen Ashes” based on Matthew 6:1-6.  Our offerings will be for Wings of Mercy.

PLEASE NOTE
ANNIVERSARY:  This week marks the fourth anniversary of Rev. Copley’s ordination into the ordained ministry.  We thank God for the gifts he has given this servant among us!
THE DISABILITY CONCERNS COMMITTEE provides chairs with armrests in the back rows of the sanctuary for those with special needs. There are three chairs on the side aisle which are reserved with extra space for those with walkers.  We are pleased to be able to make these available to members of our church family who may be blessed by this convenience.
STAFF NOTES:  Char Bulthuis will be attending the Simply Youth Ministry Conference in Chicago from February 26 through March 1.
COUNCIL NOTES:  The Council met last Tuesday.  We welcomed Donna Houskamp as a new elder and she signed the Form of Subscription.  In membership matters we accepted the memberships of Ray and Sharon Lanning from the Cascade Fellowship CRC and approved the transfers of the Joe and Christy Biermacher family to Westminster Presbyterian Church and John and Winona Schneider to Woodlawn CRC.   Pastors Doug and Lora presented their reports.  Both of them mentioned continuing education opportunities they will pursue this summer at Calvin Seminary.  Pastor Lora is also focused in her work with small groups and prospective new members.  Finally, the Council approved in concept a general policy on honoraria for non-staff positions.

CHURCH FAMILY
Our congregation extends Christian sympathies to Dan and Lynda Rupke (District #01) as they mourn the death of Dan’s sister Kim, and Corrine Kass (District #13) as she mourns the death of her sister Althea Buursma.
Grace Yff (District #08) was transferred from the hospital to Faith Hospice of Trillium Woods last weekend.  This past Tuesday her condition declined rapidly.  At this time, the family requests that there be no visits.  Our prayers are much appreciated.
Thank you very much for your prayers, visits, cards, meals, and many calls.  We can not find the right words to express our appreciation.  We feel blessed being part of your family.  Martin starts rehab this week!

A HEARTY THANK YOU to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped with IHN last week.  We had a very appreciative and sweet group of guests and they were thankful for everything we did for them.  We put a Volunteer Log in your boxes and would appreciate your filling it out and returning it.  IHN will be able to use the information to help get grants.  Our next opportunity to serve our homeless guests begins May 9.  We can always use more volunteers.  If you can help, please contact Wanda Sytsma, Cindy Lanning Burch, or Jan Oosterhouse.
