O love that casts out fear, O love that casts out sin,
Oh, stay no more without, but come and dwell within.
True sunlight of the soul, surround us as we go;
So shall our way be safe, our feet no straying know.
Great love of God, come in! Thou Spring of everlasting peace;
Thou Living Water, come! Spring up in us and never cease.
Love of the living God, of Father and of Son,
Love of the Holy Ghost, make Thou our hearts as one.

Anthem: Consecration John Ness Beck
Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise.
Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee.
Take my voice and let it sing always, only, for my King.
Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee.
Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will, and make it Thine; it shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own; it shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour at Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be ever, only, all for Thee.

Be thou still, and learn of God,
He will guide thy daily living, when in faith ye turn to Him.
Therefore daily thanks be giving. He will all thy hopes fulfill.

Be thou still, though dark thy way.

Soon the weight of sin will lighten. Seek to do thy Father’s will.

Anthem: If You But Trust in God to Guide You Georg Neumark
If you but trust in God to guide you and place your confidence in him,
You’ll find him always there beside you
To give you hope and strength within;
For those who trust God’s changeless love
Build on the rock that will not move.
Only be still and wait his pleasure in cheerful hope with heart content.
He fills your needs to fullest measure
With what discerning love has sent;
Doubt not our inmost wants are known
To him who chose us for his own.
Congregation joins on stanza 3:
Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving,
Offer your service faithfully,
And trust his work; though underserving,
You’ll find his promise true to be.
God never will forsake in need
The soul that trusts in him indeed

Sermon: RETHINKING PLANS OF MICE AND MEN
Prayer of Application
* Hymn of Response: He Leadeth Me PH 452:1-3
* Affirmation of Faith: from the Belgic Confession, article 13
We believe that this good God, after He created all things,
leads and governs them according to his holy will.
We do not wish to inquire with undue curiosity into what He does
that surpasses human understanding and is beyond our ability
to comprehend.
But in all humility and reverence we adore the just judgments of
God,
which are hidden from us,
being content to be Christ's disciples,
so as to learn only what He shows us in his Word,
without going beyond those limits.
This doctrine gives us unspeakable comfort since it teaches us
that nothing can happen to us by chance
but only by the arrangement of our gracious heavenly Father.
He watches over us with Fatherly care,
so that not one of the hairs on our heads
nor even a little bird can fall to the ground
without the will of our Father.
In this thought we rest, knowing that He holds in check the devils
and all our enemies,
who cannot hurt us without his permission and will.

* Doxology: Kremser, PH 237
We worship you, God of our fathers and mothers;
Through life’s storm and tempest our guide You have been
When perils o’er take us, You never will forsake us.
And with your help, O Lord, our battles we win.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we are winning;
Thou, Lord, are at our side, all glory be Thine!

WORSHIP TODAY
WELCOME TO CALVIN CHURCH! As we gather for worship this day, we are grateful for the presence of members and guests. If you are a visitor, we hope you feel warmly welcomed and very much a part of this worshiping community as together we lift up praises to our great God and King. We invite everyone to come to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments following the morning service. Our pastors and elders are happy to greet you at the doors as you leave the sanctuary after our services today. Prior to the service this morning you were greeted by Mike and Kathy Cok (atrium) and Roger and Judy Boer (east). This evening Don and Chris Ekdom (Fellowship Hall) welcome you back for our vesper service.
A FRIENDLY NOTE TO OUR GUESTS: Our worship service proceeds unannounced. The Sing! book is located underneath the pew. Calvin Church also has a hearing loop installed in both the Sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall. The new Calvin Church DVD is available at the Information Desk for visitors who are interested in Calvin Church and would like to know more about the activities here.

MEETINGS, ACTIVITIES, AND EVENTS
Aug. 31: REFUGEE MINISTRY GOAL PLANNING MEETING: Now that we have done a beautiful job in our initial month of welcoming and caring, what ought to be our church's goals for the next five months of assimilation? We have been blessed by a variety of folks assisting our refugee family in a variety of ways and we want to hear from you. Or you may have firsthand experience being new to a country and we'd like to hear your thoughts and ideas for this next chapter of ministry. Any are invited! Join our "Next Chapter Meeting" this coming Tuesday, 5:00 PM, August 31, in the conference room. The Refugee Ministry Leadership Team.
Sept. 1: HELP! We have one position that is open in the Allegro Ringers. Have you ever considered learning to ring? Talk to Luanne Barnes for more information—we would love to have you join us!
Sept. 5: Please plan to attend the first ADULT EDUCATION session of the fall season, which will be co-sponsored with the Mission Outreach Committee, following the morning service next week Sunday. Rev. Rob and Tara de Vries Cahill will share a report on their nine years of ministry among the Q'eqchi' Maya people of Guatemala.
Sept. 12: Save the date for the MINISTRY CELEBRATION POTLUCK to be held, Sunday, September 12 at 5:00 PM. Members with the last names beginning with A-O please bring a hot dish and P-Z please bring a salad. Desserts will be provided by the Various Ministry Groups. This celebration is your chance to learn about the many programs and opportunities that you and your family can participate in here at Calvin Church. Mark your calendars now!
Sept. 19: DISTRICTS 3 AND 14: Please save September 19 for a combined district luncheon at church. You will be called by your elder, deacon, or district care coordinator regarding the details.
Sept. 15: JAVA GROUP—YOUNG MOM'S SUPPORT GROUP begins Wednesday, September 15. Mark your calendars. Every Wednesday, 9:30-11:00 AM, excepting last Wednesdays of the month.
YOUTH VOLUNTEERS: We still have volunteer openings in some of our programs. If you feel a desire to help out in some way, contact Char and we can match up your gifts and interests with a place to help!
Sept. 25: You are invited to a WORKDAY AT EASTOWN MINISTRIES at 610 Benjamin SE on Saturday, September 25. Our humble facility has many needs such as: spackling & painting, cleaning & repairing, clearing out a dirty storage closet, painting the shelves, replacing plexi-glass windows, etc. The women might want to put hundreds of kids pictures on bulletin boards, wallpaper a wall with Bible verses, spruce things up. HELP! We are drowning in years of service with little attention to the functional ‘behind- the- scene’ necessities! We need motivated adults to help us. (Lunch will be provided.) There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the hallway to the Fellowship Hall. We will be calling your church office on Monday, September 20 so we can organize the work team. Jim and Carol Carpenter (785-2721).
“7:30 SATURDAYS”—A MEN'S ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP: There is some interest in a combined Bible Study/fellowship group for men on (you guessed it!) 7:30 Saturday mornings. While the weather is nice, it could probably involve trail bike-riding first, followed by pulling out the camp chairs and engaging in a men's study together. When the weather prohibits, the study would be moved over breakfast together at Wolfgang’s. Are you interested? Talk to Pastor Lora soon. The projected first Saturday is September 11.
ALL YOUTH MINISTRY VOLUNTEERS: According to our updated Health, Safety and Abuse-Prevention Policy, all volunteers and staff are required to complete a Youth-Ministry Volunteer Application form which will be kept on file for three years. If you did not fill out a form this past year, please do so. Forms are available at the information desk. Please turn in form to Char Bulthuis.
CADETS will be meeting at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 22 in Room 10. Boys between grades 2-6 are welcome to join us! We will be joining the GEMS. Please contact Mr. Baker at 285-0642 or Baker5351@sbcglobal.net if you plan on coming so we know how many crafts we need for that evening.
CALLING MUSICIANS OF ALL AGES: It’s almost time for the choir year to begin! Rehearsals start the first week of September and the directors heartily welcome all returning and new members to our choral and handbell groups.
GROW. LAUGH. LEARN. SHARE. Become more connected to God and your church family through small groups. Calvin Church has both fellowship-based movie groups and more in-depth book study and discipleship groups. If you are interested in joining one for the fall/spring season, please leave your name at the office.
GROWING AROUND A MEAL: Can you host one Sunday afternoon meal to bless our Calvin Church College Group? Last year, college students were blessed by the hospitality of seven different households of the church, who provided them a meal and the space to fellowship and discuss discipleship on campus. Contact Pastor Lora for more information.
PERMISSION/RELEASE FORMS NEEDED: For all youth in 2nd grade through 12th grade, please complete a 2010/11 form and return to Char’s mailbox. All children in one family can be placed on one form. Forms have been placed in your boxes. Additional copies located at the information desk.
SUMMER LEARNING PROGRAM: A few pictures of our summer program are up on the Kids Hope bulletin board. Check them out.
SUPPORT FOR OUR SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN. If you have relatives or loved ones who are currently serving or training in the U.S. military, please send contact information to Lara Heyboer at yawayoof@yahoo.com or 299-0527—this is the last two weeks that information will be gathered. Lara is compiling a list of those in uniform that we can support with expressions of care.
