Prayer of Confession
Forgive us, O Lord, for everything we do that dishonors your name.
Forgive us, for all which spoils the relationships you entrust us with:
for the moodiness and irritability that make us difficult to live with,
for the insensitivity that makes us careless of the feelings of others,
for the selfishness that makes life harder for others.
Forgive us, O Lord, for everything that spoils our witness for you:
for how our decisions deny right doctrine;
for the discrepancy between our creed and our conduct,
for our failings which make it easier for people to criticize your
church.
Protect us and our daily steps in the path of discipleship.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Grant unto us a true penitence for our sins
and so strengthen us by your Spirit that in the days to come we may
live more nearly to your will.
Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.

What does the sixth request mean?
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one means,
By ourselves we are too weak to hold our own even for a moment.
And our sworn enemies—the devil, the world, and our own flesh—
never stop attacking us.
And so, Lord, uphold us and make us strong with the strength of your
Holy Spirit, so that we may not go down to defeat in this spiritual
struggle, but may firmly resist our enemies until we finally win the
complete victory.

FROM THE COUNCIL
At its meeting this week the Council approved the list of elder and deacon nominees for the next Council term; approved an annual retreat for each new Council to be held in late May or early June; discussed for the benefit of our delegates upcoming agenda items for the January 19 meeting of Classis GR East; heard a thorough and helpful report on the youth and education programs from Youth Director Char Bulthuis; and approved Mary Carol Brouwer as a new member of the Education Committee. The Council also heard with joy and gratitude the Treasurer's Report that our congregation had exceeded its giving goals for 2011. Weekly financial reporting in the bulletin will resume on February 5.
CHURCH FAMILY
We give thanks to God for Jacob Oliver Netz, born on Tuesday morning, January 17, to Brian and Amy Netz (District #01). Jacob is welcomed by his sisters Allory and Molly and his church family here at Calvin. Mom and baby are doing well.
After experiencing complications in his recuperation, Rich Baker (District #10) needs revision surgery on his hip. This is scheduled for January 24.
We rejoice with Judy and Art Jongsma (District #03) that a cyst removed surgically from Judy this past Wednesday turned out to be benign. Judy anticipated being home from the hospital by the weekend.

Jack Holwerda (District #12) and Paul Zwier (District #10) continue to recuperate at their homes from recent surgeries.
