Book Club

A group of eight to eighteen women who love to read meets once per month on Mondays.   In May the group chooses an eclectic mix of books to read the following year which always engenders lively discussion.   Each year’s list of books is available in our library, and Schuler Books has the month’s choice on display at 20% off.   The group is open to all readers.

Wednesday Night Suppers

Twice a month, supper is served at church for those participating in Wednesday night church programs and other young families. A free-will donation covers the cost of the meal. Skip the fast food on the way from school to church, and enjoy some good food and conversation here at church instead.

Bon Appétit

Each fall, small groups are formed for eating meals together several times during the year.  Some dine out; others meet in homes.  This is a great way to make friends at Calvin Church and to grow deeper in your relationships with fellow church members.  Contact Judy Jongsma if you would like to join a group this year.

Fifty+

Once a month, on a Monday, a lively group of adults over fifty meet for breakfast and fellowship at The Omelette Shoppe in Breton Village.    Watch for announcements in the bulletin and join us—no reservations necessary.

Garden Club

This group meets monthly on Wednesday evenings during the summer, and is open to anyone who enjoys growing things.   The season often begins with a lecture or presentation at church, and meetings range from work on the church gardens to tours of local nurseries, greenhouses, beautiful private gardens, and occasionally whole neighborhoods.   Refreshments, on location, are a highlight, and we conclude the year with a garden supper in October.   Always open to visitors, we often carpool from church for tours. We also provide flowers in the sanctuary by request; please look for the flower calendar on the information desk.

Athletic Fellowship Groups

Men’s Golf

This rather informal golf league made up of thirty to thirty-five men meets on Tuesday mornings in the summer months (beginning in May) for four person scrambles.   Averaging twenty weeks of golf at the Christian Recreation Center’s Fellowship Greens (on 36th Street SE), this group enjoys coffee, doughnuts, and great camaraderie, as well as good golf.   With minimal fees and a dollar for the pot each time for the year-end luncheon, the foursomes are always open to new (and old) players.

Men’s Slow-pitch Softball

Calvin Church has about 15 ballplayers, ages fourteen and up, who play at the Christian Recreation Center (on 36th Street SE) on Mondays, beginning in May and playing through July.   The games start at various times after 6:30 PM.   The fees are about $20 per player and a membership at the Rec Center is also required.  Fans are welcome to cheer the team on.  Come on and try it out!

Women’s Slow-pitch Softball

About sixteen women from Calvin Church, fourteen years and up, play softball at the Christian Recreation Center on 36th Street SE. After two or three practices in May, we meet and play several other church teams on Wednesday evenings, usually after 7:00 PM, through July.   Every player must have a Recreation Center membership, and must pay a team fee of about $20.   Open to new members, the team often builds on their friendship after the game over snacks and drinks.
