For several decades now Calvin Church has sponsored one of the finest clothing ministries in Grand Rapids. Located in a house right next to the church, the Calvin Church Family Assistance program makes, mends, and distributes hundreds and hundreds of sweaters, shirts, jeans, dresses, and winter coats each year. Sometimes new clothing items like undergarments are purchased and distributed to families in need, but most of the clothing is donated used clothes which are cleaned, mended as needed, and then made available.
A team of volunteers is headed by Calvin member Elaine Bardolph. The Family Assistance program receives referrals from area agencies as well as from Calvin Church members. The results are wonderful as each year many girls and boys who might otherwise not have proper winter attire receive new or good-as-new jackets, hats, mittens, and scarves!
Those who would like to donate their time or some used clothing or their time to assist this ministry are encouraged to stop by the Family Assistance house on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 9-11, in the morning or to contact the church office.
