Looking to grow in your knowledge and understanding of the Bible? Hoping to either find or deepen friendships with other Christians? Want to connect during the week to share an interest or sport?
Calvin Church knows a healthy Christian life continues beyond worship on Sunday. A wide variety of groups provide you with opportunities to gather and enjoy community. Visitors and new members are warmly welcomed. To learn more about a group, please contact the church office to be connected to a leader.
Women’s Bible Study
Come engage in coffee and prayer time, followed by Bible study. The women meet on Wednesday mornings, starting at 9:30. Pastor Rebecca guides this group of women in studying the Bible. The meetings start in October and run through April, with a break around Christmas.
Men’s Bible Study
Growing in relationship with each other and God, the men’s Bible study group meets at church every other Friday morning at 8:30 am and is led by Pastor Jake.
College and Career Group
Post-High young adults in the college or early career stage of life meet for coffee on week days and once a month for a Sunday meal after the morning worship service. Calvin Church members also provide transportation to worship from Calvin College campus.
A mix of singles and couples from post-college age to mid-life, Connections Club meets approximately every other month on a Saturday night. Some past events include karaoke, an escape room, River City Improv, dinner and drinks at a local brewery, a golf scramble, and game night at a member’s home.
Twice a month, supper is served at church for young families and all those participating in Wednesday night church programs. A free-will donation covers the cost of the meal. Skip the fast food, step away from the frenzy, and enjoy some good food and conversation here at church instead, 5:00-6:00 pm.
We love to read books and talk about them! Book club meets once per month on Monday evenings. In May the group chooses and eclectic mix of books to read the following year. Click here to see what we’re reading this year. Local bookstore, Schuler Books and Music has the month’s choice on display and offered at 20% off. The group is open to all readers.
Movie Discussion Groups
These intergenerational adult groups meet four or five times a year in members’ homes to have a lively discussion of a previously viewed movie. Some groups use Christianity Today’s Discussion Guide while others are structured differently.
Group meetings follow the growing season, gathering on Wednesday evenings from summer through October. A club meeting could be a lecture or presentation, a work session on the church gardens, a tour of local nurseries or private gardens. Refreshments, on location are always a highlight, and we conclude the year with a garden supper.
Each fall, small groups are formed for eating meals together several times during the year. Some dine out, others meet in homes. This is a great way to get to know each other and enjoy good food!
A lively group of adults over fifty meet for breakfast and fellowship once a month on a Monday at Russ’ (2750 – 28th St). Join us – no reservations necessary!

An informal golf league, we meet on Tuesday morning during the summer for four person scrambles. Averaging twenty weeks of golf at the Christian Recreation Center’s Fellowship Greens, this group enjoys coffee, doughnuts and great camaraderie along with good golf. With minimal fees and a dollar for the pot each time towards the year-end luncheon, we are always open to new (and old) players.
Men’s Slow-pitch Softball
Ballplayers age fourteen and up play evening games at the Christian Recreation Center on Mondays, beginning in May and playing through July. Minimal fees and a membership at the Rec Center are required. Fans are welcome to cheer the team on. Come and try it out!
Women’s Slow-pitch Softball
Our team, ages fourteen and up, play softball at the Christian Recreation Center on Wednesday nights. We meet and play several other church teams in evening games May through July. Every player must have a Rec Center membership and pay a small team fee. Our friendship and time together often builds after the game over snacks and drinks. Play with us!
